Sixteenth regain.
★ Fighting the Red Skull on the Russian front, teamed up with General Vasily Karpov. Failing to save the village. November 1942.
Day Regained: 365
Game of Regain: Nishinoya's heart game.
Form: A crystalline sugar cog wheel with flakes of gold painted onto it. One of two uses remaining.
Game Summary: Explore the inner mindscape of a determined teenage volleyball player. With balloons.
Game Effects: It's actually a pretty pleasant experience, and it leaves Bucky more determined than ever to support the hopeful, stubborn kids he knows in Aather.
Type: Neutral negative.

Summary of Memory: This memory covers another mission in World War II, and a rather bleak one. Captain America, Bucky, and the rest of the Invaders team up with Soviet troops led by a Colonel Vasily Karpov, a ruthless man who has no problem summarily executing some prisoners and torturing others for information. Steve takes a particular disliking to him, but resolves to work with him anyway, and Bucky follows his lead. Their goal is to investigate reports of a German super-weapon in a nearby village called Kronas. Bucky attempts to clear the way for the rest of the Invaders and Soviet soldiers with stealthy, lethal tactics--something which is apparently his typical job with the Invaders--but the alarm is still raised when they arrive at the village, and an all-out superpowered fight begins between the Invaders and the German supersoldier known as Master Man. The secret weapon turns out to be a massive laser gun created and operated by the supervillain known as the Red Skull, and when he realizes he can't win the fight, he turns it on the village itself. While the Invaders are attempting to save as many people as possible, the Red Skull and Master Man flee the scene. Karpov attempts to take the superweapon for Soviet use, but it was set to self-destruct and detonates amidst his troops instead. The whole operation, while technically successful in making sure the superweapon is out of German hands, is desperately dismal in the end: an entire village of innocent Russians is destroyed with few survivors, and Vasily Karpov emerges deeply bitter about the difference between the cold, bloody war of attrition fought by the Russians and the flashy superpowered war fought by the Invaders and their German counterparts.
Effects of Memory: This memory confirms a few things for Bucky--namely, what his role in the Invaders was, and also, just how much of an honorable man Steve Rogers is even in the face of the horrors of war. Still, Bucky's also left with a sinking feeling about said horrors, along with a sort of repulsed understanding of what motivated the Soviets to do what they later did to him. Bonus to the feeling that he has a dark side he needs to hide, as well as to his simmering negative emotions in general.
